Chapter Thirteen

Levi held his head high and stared down at the creature. “Brother.”

The woman’s blood still dripped from those nasty bony wings, the crimson droplets hitting the snow at his feet in a steady stream. Bile rose in my throat, and my legs weakened. He had killed her—a confused, scared old woman. I couldn’t get the image of her final breath out of my mind, and with it came the last breaths of the others. The man in the parking lot, the two soldiers on the road in the mountains, and the countless others I had not seen. Those crimson splotches surrounding the park, were they because of him?

He spoke, but not in English. I was pretty sure it wasn’t in any earthly tongue. The words were smooth, honeyed, strung together like fairy lights on a hedge. They were whispers in the wind.

Levi did not reply. His eyes clouded, and a shadow crossed his face. It was such a human reaction, one I recognized well. Anger.

This creature, Levi’s brother, was taller and bulkier than he was. But his voice was just as deep, just as honeyed. His golden eyes locked onto me, sending goose bumps across my skin. It was an odd contrast, and yet, his yellow eyes unnerved me more than Levi’s red ones.

The newcomer came closer, peering around Levi to stare at me.

“Raak,” Levi warned.

The creature—Raak—circled me, those deadly golden eyes roving over me. It reminded me of the way my neighbor’s cat would watch the birds from her living room window. I knew he did not see me the way Levi did. I was not a help but a hindrance.

He stopped in front of me, eyes narrowing. I did not miss how Levi angled himself, so half of me was hidden behind his shoulder.

“Who are you?” That dark voice, rich and powerful, unsettled me as much as it made me swoon.

Was this an ability they had?

Their voices sent a thrill through me, like an animal that used a song to attract its prey. That was the only explanation for why I could even possibly consider having such feelings.

They’re monsters, Emilia. Get a hold of yourself.

Levi spoke for me. “None of your concern.”

Those golden eyes turned to his own, crinkling in amusement. “A pet then, perhaps. Weak and inferior, it serves you as nothing more than amusement.”

Levi hissed, saying something in their language. Even though I could hear the anger, the rage in those words meant nothing to me, they still sounded hauntingly beautiful.

Raak raised an eyebrow but continued, seemingly changing the topic. “Where are Tress and the others?” His voice was darker like he was expecting bad news.

Why is he speaking in English if they have their own language? Which quite frankly sounded so much better than my language if I was honest with myself. And then Levi turned to me, and I understood. Raak spoke in English for me so I could understand everything.

“They took them,” Levi ground out.

Raak cocked his head sideways, eyes roaming over the boxes and tents the military had left behind.
